The March rains had us inspired to learn all about mushrooms!  We explored several varieties of 'funky' mushrooms: portabella, shiitake, oyster, and crimini.
Picture
Then we cleaned them by rubbing them with a paper towel.
Picture
This egg slicer came in handy for making some nice thin slices.
Picture
Once our mushrooms were prepped we fried them in coconut oil and sea salt until they were fragrant and crispy.
Picture
Then we added fresh oregano from the garden.
Picture
For our pizzas we spread tomato sauce on an English muffin.
Picture
Used tongs to add grated cheese on top.
Picture
And used tongs to add the crispy mushrooms on top of the cheese.  Using tongs is an excellent activity to improve fine motor skills and develop the pincer grasp used in writing.
Picture
For the final touch we added fresh herbs from the garden.
Picture
We baked them in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes and had some super tasty pizzas!
Picture
We started to grow our own mushrooms with this fun kit and we have been reading 'Mushroom in the Rain' to learn how water and rain helps mushrooms GROW!

Picture
The Spring rains had us dancing and puddle splashing...
Picture
Picture
we made rain paintings by using washable markers and raindrops...
Picture
Picture
thunderstorm collages...
Picture

Picture
Picture
and when it stopped raining we made our own rain!
Picture
Picture
In yoga time we sing "pitter patter pitter patter down came the rain"...
Picture
Picture
And then the sun shines and we are a beautiful rainbow!  Ask the kids to sing you our rainbow song!
Picture
We explored rainbows by making our own with the water wand...
Picture
and using this prism to discover that sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow!

We made rainbow gift cards...

rainbow watercolors...

rainbow sorting and beading...

Picture
Picture
we mixed primary colors to create rainbow play-dough...
Picture

and we made rainbow fruit skewers!

At story time we have been reading about all the different colors of the rainbow and talking about what colors different foods are and how we can try to eat at least 5 colors of the rainbow a day.

Check out this free chart that helps kids try new foods:

We celebrated Spring by making a cooperative Spring mural.  First we cut out native plants and Monet landscapes, then we arranged them and glued them down, and finally we added baby rabbits and chicks.

Nothing says Spring more in Austin than the sweet scent of the Texas Mountain Laurel blossom...
Picture
and the soft wisps of a dandelion.
Picture
We also had a blast spring cleaning!  We loved watching our sponges grow while they soaked in water...

We learned all about BUNNIES by reading these classics...
Picture
Picture
Picture
Then we went on a field trip and hiked over to Mama Stephanie's house to meet BunBun!!
Picture
Mama Stephanie showed us BunBun's hutch and told us all about how to take care of a rabbit and what kinds of foods rabbits like to eat.
Picture
The kids picked veggies from the garden and gave BunBun a scrumptious snack.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Back at the Children's Garden we danced the Bunny Hop...
Picture
practiced Rabbit Pose...
Picture
and practiced Bunny Breath:

3 quick inhales through the nose and one long exhale through the nose.

Breathing exercises are excellent tools for kids to learn how to calm, empower, and self regulate themselves!

Happy Spring!

The kids look like they really enjoyed all of the activities you have prepared for them. It is great that you considered making pizza as an activity for the kids and it looks really delicious. Reading your blog makes me think of the many lessons you have taught the kids. Lessons where kids really enjoyed spending time on. I am a kindergarten teacher and I hate keeping them inside the classroom and that is why I always bring them outside so that they can learn more. Last week I thought them the life cycle of a butterfly and I am so happy to see the amazement in their eyes.

How Does Your Garden Mow link

The front lawn is a very important part of the house simply because it is the first place that your guests are your visitors pass through before they enter the house. It is also the most noticeable area of your house from outside. That is why it is only right that you make it look presentable and it should be neat and clean and attractive. And that is not just for the viewers outside, it is also for you. The appearance of your house or the neatness of your front lawn describes your personality. Therefore if your front lawn is dirty, it would only tell the people that home owner itself is also not in when it comes to his house or his belongings.

G8 LED Grow Light Review link

Plants need light. Hydroponic plants are no exception. LED grow lights provide the full spectrum of light that plants need for photosynthesis. Without this, the plants will die. Other lighting methods have been used in the past, but these have not produced the quality of lighting that the LED grown lights produce. LED grow lights have revolutionized hydroponic growth. They deliver only the amount of light that the plant needs without producing too much heat that may burn the plant.
